High Performance Computing
Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the platform of choice for High Performance Computing (HPC), solving those computational problems that require more computing power than can be delivered by a single desktop or server.
Red Hat has taken HPC to the next level, delivering an integrated and fully supported solution that delivers value to the engineer, researcher, or financial analyst that needs solutions faster, with less overhead and expense.
Now, anyone can take advantage of high performance computing. From a small desk-side cluster for departmental use to a large cluster housed in a dedicated data center, Red Hat High Performance Computing delivers the platform to cost effectively crunch any size problem.
Time to solution
For many businesses, solving technical computing problems quickly translates directly into increased profit and competitive advantage. It's about efficiently utilizing resources more effectively - people and computing assets. Red Hat High Performance Computing removes complexity from technical experts and IT staff, allowing them to focus on solving business problems.
Components
Red Hat High Performance Computing starts with the stable, reliable, high-performance Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform. The most popular choice in enterprise-class HPC software. In addition, a scalable cluster file system, Red Hat Global File System, is included to enable every cluster node to have a common view of storage.
A range of expert services, support, training, and skills transfer options are also available. And because Red Hat is the most popular enterprise-class HPC solution, a wide range of third-party HPC scheduling tools are available. This yields the ultimate in flexibility and performance.
Target workloads
Red Hat High Performance Computing is matched to provide flexible, high-performance computing resources for the following sample workloads:
Engineering
- Computational fluid dynamics
- Finite element analysis
- Crash simulation
Oil and gas
- Reservoir simulation
- Seismic survey analysis
Life sciences
- Drug research
- Genetic research
Financial services
- Financial analytics
- Statistical analysis
Cycle Harvesting
Installing Red Hat High Performance Computing gives you the added benefit of cycle harvesting from systems that aren't part of the dedicated cluster.
Any system that has Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 installed includes virtualization. Virtualization can be used to dedicate spare capacity on other systems to the cluster with no side effects or disruption to the other workloads running on that system. For example, ordinary desktop and workstation computers could be used during the day for their normal activities, but at night they could be joined to the cluster. Servers that have low utilization rates can have unused capacity dedicated to the cluster. Cycle harvesting can be carefully limited, and because it operates inside a protected virtual machine sandbox, security and reliability are ensured.
